Prop spin in gear

Sorry if this sounds stupid.With the engine in gear should you be able to spin the prop by hand without any resistance from the top end?I can turn mine in the forward direction easy but i cant turn it backwards.

Not knowing what type of motor it is, you might have it in forward and be able to spin it one way but the reason you cannot spin it the other way is because it is locked in gear to go forward. If you put it in reverse it should normally lock both ways. If this is the case what your describing is probably normal. You probably feel and hear a clicking sound when your are spinning it in the free direction when you are spinning it in gear.

Its a 120 chrysler.I can hear that clicking sound and in reverse it does the same thing.

does it lock in opposite directions when you are in forward and reverse? spin freely in neutral?

If you hear a clicking sound your cables need to be adjusted.

The drive dogs on both gears and the dog clutch are tapered on the back end to ease engagement. Typically, the prop will lock up in both directions in both gear positions BUT It is not necessarily so.

When you turn the prop in the same direction as the gear you are in, the back end of the dogs may "ramp" up over each other and will click when they drop back. As long as the engine goes into gear and does not pop out under load, then there is nothing to worry about.

Its popping out in reverse.
