Prop spinning at idle

The prop on my 250hp yamaha spins in neutral. It does not appear to affect the performance of the motor (in forward anyway) but the gears grind a bit when I try and put it in reverse. I'm no mechanical genuis but am quite certain that it isn't suppose to do this. It is also a problem when trying to flush the motor after use as it is very unsafe to have an exposed spinning prop. Doen anyone have any idea what might be causing this? Is it something I can fix myself or should I just bite the bullet and take it to a mechanic. Thanks in advance.

Murr-

Re: Prop spinning at idle

this should probably be in Outboards but until then, a spinning prop in neutral is normal. The hypoid gear oil is making the gears act like a torque converter. You should be able to stop it very easily rubbing a block of wood on the exhaust hub.

hello
that is normal. pretty much what boomyal says.
no worries. if it bothers ya remove the prop. they normally dont spin if in the water. its an oil adhesion thing and not a mechanical thing.
good luck and keep posting
