Prop spray question

Hi, I have some questions which will leave no doubt as to my ignorance. First, some background. I had a 1955 Johnson Seahorse 25 short shaft on a 15' Deep-V aluminum boat [80" width, 40HP max. rating] I recently bought. The motor had some lower unit problems which I tried to repair, but ultimately abandoned because it wasn't really big enough for my boat and family.

I purchased a 1979 Mercury 40HP, which is absolutely wonderful and much faster than I anticipated. At full throttle, however, water is sprayed around the base of the motor, reaching the wiring harness and occasionally spraying over the transom. The top plate on the lower unit is almost dead even with the lowest point on the hull [which I did check before actually buying the motor]. The Merc is a couple of inches longer than the Johnson overall though. Do I just need to raise the trim one more hole, or do I have the wrong motor or prop for the boat?

With my wife and four kids in the back 2/3 of the boat [or anywhere in the boat, for that matter] I have no problem getting up on plane quickly, if that's relevant. Everything seems right except for the water spraying up around the motor  .

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!!

Re: Prop spray question

bethslave,

Your engine is probably riding a bit low on the transom.

Have you tried trimming up the engine using the different tilt pin locations on the engine mounting bracket?

I'm sure you have.

If that does not work, you may have to lift the engine a bit. Do a little at a time until you are satisfied with the performance.

Re: Prop spray question

DJ,

Thanks, I'll experiment with the tilt pin a little more. It sounds like I was guessing halfway right...
