i have a '88 20 ft sweetwater pontoon, and a 82 mercury 50 hp 4cylinder 2 stroke.. i just got it recently, and although it does cruise ok, if you get to high in the rpms, it starts to cavitate.. you guys with similar setups, what prop are you using? would 'whale fin' help?? it is a manual trim motor, would lowering the trim help? sorry, i am a bit of a newbie..

What prop is on it now. Check the prop barrel or the hub for numbers. Yes -- lowering trim may help. Is the motor mounted on the pan as low as it will go.

Re: prop suggestion?

It's not likely that changing the prop will help. First, lower the motor and trim as far as possible. Also ensure that you don't have too much forward weight.

And for what it's worth, your prop is probably ventilating and not cavitating.
