I have a 24 foot pontoon boat with a 1983 Mariner 50hp motor on it. This motor now has a 16p stainless steel prop on it and I've been told that I actually should be down around a 12p. Not sure about wot but just in general, any suggestions or recommendations?

Re: Prop Suggestions

"Just in general" it's likely that the pitch should be even lower then 12".

Check out the Merc Prop Selector for an indication of approximately where you should be...

Not sure of the wide open throttle, have been told it was different rpm's. Short of installing tach, should I jsut take it to a boat mechanic and let him find out this?

You all know we're all trying to save a buck and do things ourselves. I guess there are just some things that we should let the pro's do?

It is not a bad thing to do some things yourself.

You are going to need to get a rpm reading one way or another, though.

Go ahead and get a tac its one of the most important instruments on a boat.
