Hey guys, I am looking to get the best all around performance I can out of my boat. My biggest needs are getting on plane as easy as possible since the motor is an 89 Johnson 48 spl without trim. It is on a 1991 Nitro 160tf, not sure the weight of the boat but with an average load including motor and passengers it's around 900-1000 lbs so add the hull and that's my total.

The prop I have on it now is a Michigan Wheel 11 3/4 x 17p and I can get about 26-27 mph on the GPS. My problem is I can only get to 5000 rpms with it and the motor is rated for 5500. I have 1 more hole I can go up on the mounting bracket and I have it set on the 3rd of 3 holes for tilt which tilts it the most. The touch trim has been depressurized since it locked up on me. No issues with running it like that minus being mindful when hitting reverse.

Any suggestions on what prop might maximize my rpm range, get me on plane easiest and lastly but leas the important get my best top speed would be great. Looking for a good overall prop.

Thanks, think I covered everything you ask for.

Is that OB max HP transom rated for that size boat ?

With current 48 HP should go down at least to a 15 pitch prop assuming OB is running like a champ, that should bump wour wot revs to around 5500 K, the new prop will need to be water tested with current load on flat calm no wind water cond. If over revving slightly, throttle less. Should achieve nice hole shot and nice top end speed than with current 17 pitch.

Distribute passengers evenly on deck and trim to a hole that will achieve combo rurring parallel to water level once on plane, usually 2-3 hole out transom. If you can play rising/lowering OB on mounting bracket, dial a hole that will achieve water flow at speed to skim right under small upper water defector plate or as close to it, pull head out transom and check level when combo is on plane, that's the sweet OB/transom height.

Proper deck weight distribution, trim , sweet OB height match and propped right will make boating fun difference..

Happy Boating

3 different criteria, rarely found with only one prop

Hmm ,the earliest 48 spl I could find was a 1993. Your engine is rated 48 hp @ 5000 rpm with a recommended rpm range 4500 - 5500. Dropping to a 15 would give you approx. 400 rpm. I doubt you would see any increase in speed, but your hole shot would improve.

Thanks and no it's rated for a 90 hp so it's extremely underpowered. They go back to the 80's. Check out the BRP site and its the engine code that starts with J. I verified that the butterflies are opening fully last night, so not a engine problem.

I think I'll stick with the 17 for now until I get it moved up to the last hole and see how that effects it. It doesn't have trim so I don't have to worry about it being to high and blowing out.
