Re: Prop thrust washer

In a word, Yes. The thrust washer goes on first, then the prop then the spider washer then the locknut. The tapered side of the thrust washer goes against the taper on the prop shaft. They are available in many marine places.

You can clearly see the taper on the prop shaft just behind the housing. Without it (The washer) the prop will move forward and grind into the back of the housing......obviously not good.

Re: Prop thrust washer

I am replacing the Prop guide collar (aka thrust washer) on my 1980 9.8 hp. The dealership told me the part for my year/model was no longer available from Mercury. They have two of them on hand though so I will be grabbing them both tonight.

anyone know how often these wear out or what causes them to??

Re: Prop thrust washer

Never wear out. No mechanism for wearing out. Made of bronze which resists corrosion also, so that's not an issue.

Re: Prop thrust washer

Turns out it was not the washer...it was prop hub. The rubber was shot....
