Hi Spike,

Ballpark - as tight as you can get it. Lubricate splines etc with grease first. File a mark across the end of the prop shaft first so that you can easily line up the split pin holes while tightening.

I've been chicken with tightening mine before now, and found it loose after a days running, so now I just tighten it hard down.

I'm still waiting for my prop from BPS that was shipped on the 28th , and I was wondering if you could use Lok Tite while tightning the nut down?

I don't know about 1969 but my 1978 manual 115evinrude says finger tight. use wrench to align holr for cotter pin.

I tighten mine up as far as I could till it felt as if it wouldn't go much further; then turn it just enough till I got the hole lined up. Didn't torqe it...but it felt to be over 100 ft lbs.

I tighten mine up finger tight, then back off 1/4 turn. That lets the prop slip on the splines ever so slightly every time you change forward to reverse. I've never had a stuck prop in my life, and I've never had any damage to prop hub splines or prop shaft splines.
