Prop Weight, Performance Difference?

Hi Folks!

I recently picked up a spare propeller for my old Mercury Mark 55.

The spare is the same diameter and pitch as the original. The blades of both appear to be the same shape, design, et al.

The only difference between the two is the weight. The original is bronze and heavy. The spare is aluminum and light. I'd guess there's at least a pound difference between the two.

What, if any, difference might this make in the performance of the engine and the boat?

In a car or motorcycle, the difference would be akin to having a heavier or lighter flywheel. Lighter gives you better throttle response. Heavier gives you smoother operation.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!
Dave

the prop is not the same as a flywheel, as it doesn't spin in neutral. your motor already has a flywheel,
i doubt you would notice 1 pound of difference, but you'll never know till you try it. that's assuming the blade geometry is identical.
