I'm a newbie here...not sure if this is the right forum for this question. When I throttle forward the boat moves just fine, but when I put it in reverse it goes no where. On land I put it in forward gear and the prop does not turn. When I put it reverse the prop just spins. I had new cables and cable box installed a few weeks ago.Any ideas will be helpful.
It was working fine while I was fishing thru out the day,but suddenly just wouldnt go into reverse when it was time to move to another spot.
Please feel free to email me at 3dmurals@charter.net. I check my email daily.God Bless. BassMeister

you need to get the motor cover off and check the linkage and cable... see if it moves

if it moves then remove the cale from the gear linkage and try to move it by hand.... if it moves by hand then find the neutral .... then find the forward and reverse

if eerything checks then you have to adjust your cable so when you shift it will go in gear

good luck

If you paid the have a new cable and cable box installed...haul the boat back and have them check it out while you check them out. Sounds like its out of adjustment.

Re: prop wont turn in reverse

I did what countvlad suggested below but I think I've made another problem. If the throttle is put in gear(whether forward or reverse) the prop is not supposed to spin by hand:Is that correct?? If that is the case, then I now have no forward. Everything is all connected back,I run the water thru the ears as I crank the motor on land, put throttle in reverse and it spins as it is supposed to when in gear, when I put it forward,it also spins as it is supposed to. How is that possible if it spins freely by hand. Where have I gone wrong? Please if at all possible reply to my email address 3dmurals@charter.net
. I promise I won't bother you with other emails, my computer is so old and slow that it takes forever to open. Getting a new one in November.

Re: prop wont turn in reverse

i have a feeling either theres something wrong with your controls and you dont have the right cable adjustment.. you have to get a manual for that motor, its going to save you a lot of time and frustration.

so have you tried to change gear without the cables?
do it with the motor off...

do you have a lot of play in the gear rod/shifter?(the rod that the cables connect to)

have you changed or checked the lower unit oil?
if you can take the boat back where u had the cables and controls put on... i mean it could very well be the wrong cables installed on there....

is the outboard also an 1985 or just the boat???

take a picture where the cable is connected.....

Re: prop wont turn in reverse

If the year of that 85hp Evinrude is listed somewhere above, I've overlooked it.

However, since the engine shifted fine for awhile, check the cable trunion clamping area at the engine. If that clamp was not secured onto the cable trunion, the cable could pop out effecctively canceling out the proper shifting sequence.

so have you tried to change gear without the cables?
do it with the motor off...Yes I disconneted both cables, manually I moved the gear to N then R then F.Everything worked fine. Now here is what I did next: brought the throttle handle down in R and hooked everything back up. I now have R but no F...so undid everything brought the throttle handle to F,put everything back together and have no R. I guess I'm not sure after seeing that everything works disconnected, that I am connecting/adjusting the way I am supposed to. I know I'm right there in working it out ,but I'm missing something

do you have a lot of play in the gear rod/shifter?(the rod that the cables connect to)No play, very solid

have you changed or checked the lower unit oil?Yes,its ok
if you can take the boat back where u had the cables and controls put on... i mean it could very well be the wrong cables installed on there....
I would take it back but he is on vacation until end of Aug. It's nothing he did. Real good friend. I personally feel it slipped out of adjustment and stupid me has messed it up. Heard of Murphy's Law.Well,my last name is Cammer and I am under the Cammer's Law,lol.I touch it,something aint gonna go right, lol.
is the outboard also an 1985 or just the boat???Both are 1985

take a picture where the cable is connected.....Will do.

The trunions are and clamp are fine. Like I said, I'm missing which way to adjust the thing and am getting frustrated. Took it out today and F works just great. . Is there any diagram that shows how to or which way to turn the adjustments. I truly thank all of you (especially Countvlad )for not giving up on me. God Bless You all. John(BassMeister)

Re: prop wont turn in reverse

I don't know if it could be this or not but I have a 1978 85HP Evinrude and I was having problems with not completely coming out of forward and sometimes no reverse and then it would work fine then lost reverse completely. I found the clevis that attaches to the shift rod going to the lower unit was broke. Replaced it and good as new.

I will check it out but I really still believe it's a matter of how to adjust the linkage. Thank you so much for your reply. God Bless

when you had the cables off or take the cable off again and look where the position of the linkage is in every gear and get an idea...

after that hook the cable, try to shift and play with it.. make sure the position is the same... if not, you are out of adjustment....

if everything looks good check the clevis
