Can some one tell me what the difference between a 10 x 13 , 10 x 15 and a 10 x 17 prop is. I have a 35 rude with a 10 x 15 and it skipped my 13' Whaler across the water great. The prop is no more :-( What performance differences can I expect from the other two prop's. ? Thanks in advance....

Re: Prop

The first number is the diameter, the second the pitch.

Technically speaking, pitch is the theoretical distance a prop moves forward in one revolution - assuming there is no "slippage" between the prop blade and the water.

Increasing the pitch increment by 1" will result in approximately a 200 RPM drop, and decreasing the pitch by 1" will result in approximately a 200 RPM gain. These numbers are at WOT.

What was your WOT RPM? It is imperative that the wide open throttle RPM fall within the range specified by your engine manufacturer

Re: Prop

The first number is diameter, the second pitch, the more pitch you run the more the prop "bites" the water, like going from 4th to 5th gear in your car.
If it ran well with the 10x15 i would stay with that as the 10x17 would probably bog your motor and increase stress, stay with what works.
Do you have a tach on your boat?

Re: Prop

I have 35 Rude and the three prop's listed by the manufacturer are 10 x 13,15 and 17. I know what each # means so if you say the 17 pitch will stress the motor more I'm assuming a 13 will get me out of the hole quicker but top end will fall off a bit..? I can get a brand new 10 x 13 prop for $40 under list - but I don't want to compromise the engine. What to do ...?

Re: Prop

The 13 might over rev the engine, as Hightrim said rpm is the determining factor.
Saving a couple bucks on a prop isn't worth blowing up your motor.
Try putting this up in the props forum, maybe they will know more.
