How does one know if they need a new prop? Only if it is totally trashed? What kind of maintenance should a prop get on a annual basis>

Jason :p

Re: Prop

Jason:
even a prop that is nicked badly enough that you can feel the slightest of vibration should be repaired or replaced because it can cause undue forces on the strendrive guts. I put marine grease on the prop shaft everytime I change the engine oil.

Jason,

I do not totally agree.

By the time you can actually feel a vibration, your lower unit is suffering.

Any nicks, dents, bent blades should be dealt with immediately.

Remmeber, props can be refurbished for a fraction of the price of a new one.

Re: Prop

I have a kick butt steel prop but it does have a few burs on the blade. Can I just take them off with sand paper or something? Is this something I have to have done professionally?

Thanks for your help

Jason

Re: Prop

Do you have the equipment to check the balance after you remove the burrs and nicks?

Re: Prop

No equipment at all. Just common sense and a good judge of mechanics.

J
