Propeller Oil Seal Leaking

I started my Nissan 40D last weekend. I now have an oil leak from the propeller shaft. I was wondering if the shaft seal can be changed by pulling the propeller or do I need to pull the lower unit. What type of grease should I use on the seal?

Is there a better service manual out there than the Tohatsu. I tried finding a procedure for this repair in my manual. The manual is not very good on explaining repair procedures.

Thanks in advance.

You have to pull the carrier...Fully described in the service manual.

What Elvin said, plus...

The Factory service manual is the one to have.
Use SAE 90 hypoid lube (Not Type C) in the LU (as detailed in the owner's manual).

Also... If the prop seal failed due to physical damage (such as a fishing line wrapped around it), it's fair to change just the prop shaft seal; Otherwise, consider it prudent to change all the LU seals and o-rings, as they are the same age, and can be expected to fail soon as well.

Re: Propeller Oil Seal Leaking

I'm new to outboard repair.

What is the carrier? Where can I get a Factory service manual?

Thanks.
