I have a 2001 9.9 Yamaha that I need to replace the driveshaft in. I believe that I have to remove the prop shaft in order to get to the nut on the bottom of the drive shaft that holds the pinion on.The problem is that the end cap/bearing carrier which is right in front of the prop is corroded and I am afraid to put any pressure to remove because of possible breaking the small casting. Would it be alright to apply some heat to possibly help with the corrosion problem? Penetrating fluid doesn't seem to be working.

When I had my dealer work on my lower unit on my 1998 40 they sacrificed that retaining nut and replaced it. I think they used a small cold chisel that was re-sharpened like a wood chisel and worked the retaining nut away from the casing after cutting it into 3 or 4 pieces with a small die grinder. (salt water engine)

it is possible to heat the casing with a torch but it has some risk. If you use a soldering torch it will take a long time and will heat up everything on the lower unit. It is possible to set the oil residue on fire an it will spray burning oil out the drain hole. (do not plug the drain hole worse things will happen) if you use a torch, you will have to replace all seals and any plastic or rubber parts.

If you use an oxy acetylene torch you risk melting the casing. Aluminum does not change colors when heated. there are no visible changes until it melts and is ruined. There are special welding markers that indicate when a temperature has been reached or maybe an infared thermometer.

The re-assembly adjustments on my 40 and the special tools needed to pull the carriers made the job a bit much for me. since your motor is smaller it may be much easier. Be sure you understand what your motor will require before you get started.

Thank you John, I have found another lower unit and will let this old one go. After talking to several folks, it looks like the best thing to do is just replace it. Labor being $100/hr. is too steep for me and without any guarantee's for success, I will now install the other unit which is used, and hope for the best.
Thanks again,
