Propeller shaft wont turn

Hey guys I really appreciate all the help from you all!!! I was changing the impellewr on my mercruiser 470 it is a 1983 with an Alpha Drive. When I dropped the lower part of the lower unit everything was fine and when i turned the vertical shaft that drives the propeller the propeller turned, I turned the unit upside down to get all the old junk out of the lower unit and now my propeller doesnt turn when I turn that vertical shaft!!! What did I screw up this time????? And can an idiot like this boat makes me feel fix it???

it probably just shifted out of gear. ya didn't screw anything up.... the little shaft in front of the big drive shaft is the shift shaft. if ya turn it. it shifts from f,n,r.... in fwd. prop locks ccw. in reverse the prop locks cw. in neut. where i suspect yer at. it freewheels either way.....
have you got a merc. service manual for yer stuff. if not. ya should get one.....

Did you drop it on the floor or something??????

I turned the unit upside down to get all the old junk out of the lower unit and now my propeller doesnt turn when I turn that vertical shaft!!!

Basically, it sounds like you have knocked it out of gear. Just turn the shift shaft to the forward position again.

Take the advice and buy a good OEM service manual.
