i have 2000 mercury 90hp 2stroke. changed lower unit oil and noticed water in it (milky color) also i could see gear lube leaking out into the water when i started my engine last. i changed upper and lower seals around drive shaft that were under water pump. checked the one on the shift rod, and it is in good shape.

i need to replace the one on the prop shaft, but i cant figure out how to remove it. it looks like i need to take off the bearing carrier, but i was told i could just pop the old seals out and put new ones back in. does anyone have experience with this??

Did you inspect the sealing washers under the drain and fill screws? They are often the source of water ingress.

BTW there's two seal there also.

They ?could? be pulled out in place by carefully drilling and screwing small sheet metal screws through them but that's not exactly an ?easy? method cause you'll have to work your way around the prop shaft.

Why are you asking? Is the bearing carring carrier completely frozen into the housing by salt/corrosion? If not, simply remove the two bolts and pull it out then remove the seals by pushing on them from the inside out.

Re: propellor shaft seal removal.

thank you for the quick replies guys,

1. yes, i replaced the seals behind the drain screw, oil fill level screw, and vent screw when i changed the gear lube (i keep alot of those and put new ones every time, they are cheap) i think prop shaft seal is the only other place water would be getting in, i checked everything else.

2. yes again, i took those two nuts off and first tried prying off the bearing carrier with screwdriver. then got a wheel puller. i didnt want to apply too much pressure with the puller and mess something up, so i quit that.

tomorrow i think im going to get a "seal puller" i guesss its like a screwdriver handle with a hook at the end. ill try to drill hole in the seal and pull it that way, unless someone has other suggestions

Unless you do a complete pressure and vacuum test you can never be sure of your possible leaks.

Not really. Considering that you can get all 5 seals for let say 25 bucks.
