What is the proper fluid to use? I was told just plain transmission fluid will do.

I was curious also. Its an alpha 1 gen 1 for a 140 merc.

It says to use "super-duty gear lubricant" I don't really know what to look for? Will I only be able to find that at a marine store?

He's talking about trim pump fluid.....
I believe that you are talking about gear oil for the stern drive....
I use Mercruiser, but Napa should have something that will work......;)

This is the trim motor with 2 selonoids, one for up and one for down. My boat is 1982 26' Searay Sundancer GM 350/260 hp and the motor is mounted to left of engine near the stern. It has a air valve with a screw to the right where you put fluid in a tiny hole. I put reg transmission fluid in and hope that is ok. It is working good now. The air screw was tight and I loosened it up a bit. Do you know the correct way to open the valve? How loose?

Ayuh,.........

It's about the simplest Hyd. System there is,+ it'll pump about Any Oil that's under 50W...........
But it works Better,+ Quicker with something around a 10W,.........
ATF comes to mind,+ the Color helps to track Oil Leaks......
