Hello,

What is the proper oil from my small two stroke "air cooled" outboard?
Since its air cooled would I not want the low ash TC oil and not the no ash tcw3 oil of the water cooled variety? I'm not sure what to go with. Tcw3 or just TC? Feels wrong going with the water cooled no ash oil since my outboard is air cooled..

In my air cooled Tanaka 3HP I run the same TCW-3 oil I use in my C90 Yamaha but I do run a bit more oil than the standard 50:1 ratio....since it's air cooled....no problems so far.

Air cooled two strokes require air cooled two stroke oil. TCW3 is for water cooled engines. The label on the container indicates if the oil is for air cooled engines. Air cooled motors run much hotter than water cooled engines.

Agree with Silvertip...I'm a Small Engine mechanic as well as Marine.

Get small engine 2-stroke oil...used in chain saws, trimmers, etc.

It's a synthetic oil and will likely cost more but it's your money...what make of outboard are we talking about anyways?

Also, what does the manufacturer recommend?

1975 tas tanaka-12b 1.2hp, the manual I found does not specify the oil type. I think im going to add some seafoam to the mix as well. Only thing it mentions is 50-1 mix and that its air cooled.
