Just had thermostat replaced on mercruiser 5.0 and also replaced temp sensor.took boat out and temp never left 120-130,took back to mech. and he said gravel had gotten in sensor area and was'nt working. Is'nt this just some probe that would work anyway whether gravel was around it or not.Whats normal temp I should be reading,I know it's above 130 degrees right?Anyone w/info on this would help greatly. This is a warranty issue so I'm still using this mech.

Re: proper temp.

The first thing you need to do is find out if it's the engine running too cool, or the guage reading improperly. Get yourself a IR Temp gun and when running under load, test the engine temperature right at the sending unit and see how it compares to your temp gauge. Most raw water cooled engines under load will run around 170?.

Re: proper temp.

see the stat and sensor were both replaced and thats when i told them about temp being 120-130.i think they just messed up when installing one or the other. now they say gravel is the issue and thats why it's reading low..just don't sound right..

Re: proper temp.

That is why I said you need to find out if the engine is actually running cold or just the gauge is showing that.
It's called troubleshooting.

Re: proper temp.

Just got my boat back from marine max for the third or forth time since may.supposedly replaced t-stat for third time. so today everything starts out ok,temp is reading about 170 degrees and stays that way for about 20 min. then drops back to where it's been when all this bs started 130 degees.Has anybody out there experienced this before and what is the worst that can happen from such a low temp.I believe my pateince (sp) has reached it's end w/marine max here in seabrook tx.I just can't see me walking away witout my boat fixed 100%,since I've already paid these guys,Any suggestions fellow boaters?

Re: proper temp.

Did you actually check the engine when the gauge said 130 to find out what it actually was? if not, then you are wasting your time asking, and wasting your money taking it to the dealer and them putting in a new thermostat each time.
Take it out and run it. When it shows 130?, then check the base of the temp sender with the gun I mentioned and see if it agrees with your gauge.
