Was wondering if anyone could tell me the proper way to change the lower unit oil on a 1984 evinrude 35hp o/b motor? I know there is a screw that when removed drains the oil, but is there a proper way to do it? And whats the proper way to add oil?

There should be two screws. One at the top and one at the bottom.. Take them both out and drain the old oil and then fill it from the bottom. When it starts coming out the top one it is full. Put back in both screws and you are done.

You can get a cheap lube pump at Walmart or most auto parts stores.
Fill slowly from the bottom until it starts coming out the top (vent) hole.
Put the top plug in,unscrew the lube pump and quickly put the bottom screw back in.
BE SURE to replace the plastic washers on the drain and vent screw and make sure the old ones came off with the plug and not stuck in the holes.
Get them from any Johnson-Evinrude dealer for a couple bucks. They are a one use only washer!

DO NOT undo the Philips headed screw next to the drain plug!
If you do the gear change mechanism inside the gear case will come adrift!

The drain/fill screws are #17 in the diagram below.

Just be sure you don't remove the Phillips head screw (#13) ... it connects the shift rod to the shift lever inside the gearcase!

Some also say to top it off through the top hole after waiting a few minutes for the trapped air to get out. Use a pump style oil can filled with lube and shoot it into the top hole until full. Rick
