Out fishing the other day and oops wasn't looking and hit a rock ledge. Prop is a stainless steel 15x17-15 spline on a 85 Evinrude 140V4. Prop can be repaired but am looking for a bit of advice on changing to a faster (top end prop) this one seems to pull real well out of the hole even pulling a 3 person raft but does not have what I feel is good top end. Can anyone tell me first of all the WOT of the motor, seems to run best at 52-5600. and secondly what a possible pitch and size for better top end.
Thanks

Re: Props

What is the wot rpm you can achieve with this set up now?

Re: Props

Will run at 6000-6200 with this. But I am a little afraid of running at that RPM so I try to stay around 5600. As I mentioned out of the hole, just goes but at top end seems that canoists are catching me.

Re: Props

If it will hold a solid 6200 with your normal load, you could increase pitch by 2"...If your not sure if it's 6000 or 6200, I would say leave it....you don't want to prop for much lower than 5800.....

Re: Props

With normal load in it, It will run at between 6080 and 6140 RPM. I do not have a speedo on the boat but it just doesn't seem to make any difference from that RPM and the 5600 that I run it at normally. My son is coming out in a few weeks and has a portable GPS so I'll be able to get an accurate MPH at both RPM's. I am not that familiar with props so I not that sure which way to go on the one I have. We live on a lake that is 28 miles long and of course fishing is best at the far end. We also have wall to wall relatives up for rafting etc so I was thinking two props. The boat is trailered and I can change the props very easily. Any suggestions for the top end prop??

Re: Props

Kenny must be busy (fishing) so I'll add my .02 worth. The 2 prop idea is great. I wish more folks would buy into that idea (pun intended). If I were doing it I'd be real tempted to go to a 19. That will bring the r's down a tad and then work on the set up to gain some back. Both scenarios should gain you speed and efficiency.

Re: Props

Thanks for the help. It really is appreciated. As I mentioned in previous quests, I am deaf and cannot use a phone. I email my son and he shops for me. I gather I simply ask him to source a 15x19 15 spline OMC prop? The number on the prop(15x17) on there now is 391290. The motor is a V4 but the bottom end has been converted to V6.
Would you recommend Alum. or Stainless?
Again thanks

Re: Props

The 1985 140 looper came with a V6 style case and a bit of a strange gear ratio. Now, thats kinda one of those good-n-bad deals. Its bad because of the gear ratio, the V4's seemed to work better with the standard 2:1 ratio.

But its good because we can mount the props higher because of the larger diameter. Now, with that in mind lets review a couple of things on your motor.

The rev limiter is at either 6200 or 6700 depending on which pack you have. Some didnt have a limiter. I'd suggest we use 6000 as a target top rpm with your average load. Like Kenny mentioned we really dont like to get below 5800.

If I were setting this up I'd look into a 19. Dont get hung up on the diameter. Some real good props like a Turbo or Stiletto have diameters like 14 1/4" and work real well. I'd get the 19 which will drop the r's back to about 5700 (in theory) from your 6100. Then think about raising the motor. That will get the rpm back up. I'll bet we could get the 19 back to 5900-6000 easy.

HEY! A thought -- a Michigan Edge II is a lot like a Raker. We might look around to see if we can find a 22 Edge II (equilivent to a 20 Raker).

Kenny -- know anybody who has one of those????

Re: Props

BTW -- dont be afraid of rpms on that motor. We used to race a couple of the 2.0 liter versions of your motor. The one in the stock class turned 8200. The modified one turned 9500.

Kenny should be along soon. I bet he has an idea of where to find a prop to try.

Re: Props

Yes, I do happen to know where a 22P edge is......Hummmm.......isn't that something..
I don't know what to do with it...it's just setting here, looking me in the face, or..., no, wait, that's MY face I see in that prop!!!
ktsander@st-tel.net

Re: Props

Wow, don't ya just love it. A year ago when I first bought the boat on my retirement, I didn't know a thing about it. With all your help over the last year and reading all the material you fellows have posted have actually learned mountains about a new love in my life. I gotta tell ya that you'll never know the confidence that you have given me in looking after the boat and motor. I'll email Kenny right after this post. Thanks a million.
