1969-70 L6 165hp 250ci I have an old mercruiser voltage regulater on my transom "black finned enclosed thing" w/three prong circular plug in.Wondering if i should go to a single wire built in regulator Alt. and would it be difficult to do?

This is one you can change :D, but if there's nothing wrong with the one that's there, why change it. If you have a problem, then diagnose it to the alternator or the regulator. If it's the alternator, by all means change to an internally regulated unit. If it's the reg and the alt is good, just put a Bosch RE15 solid state reg in....

Not sure if either component is good yet. Just thinking about the near future and is that regulater you spoke of ok for marine? I assume you wouldn't tell me to use one that isn't but had to ask? It sounds auto...:p

It's completely solid state and completely sealed. Ran it on my 165 for 8 years. No chance of fire, spark or explosion. Two spade lug terminals out the bottom and the case is the ground. One terminal is the wire from the ignition, the other is the rotor current to the alternator (DF). Bolt it to the engine somewhere and have worry free regulation. :D
