I am looking at purchasing an 01 crestliner rampage 2300 with a 5.0 mercruiser. I am new to inboards, so I'm trying to get some input on them. thanks.

Other than the added weight of the engine, which is not that big of a deal, the only thing I do not like about i/o's (as that's what I'm assuming you're talking about) is that they have a much deeper draft requirement than an outboard. You can trim an outboard almost all the way out of the water, but the i/o still has a decent amount in the water, enough to hit on rocks and debris in a shallow channel.

Coming from a V8 mechanic background, it was the only way to go. Most boats in that class are going to be I/O. Make sure you get enough horsepower, thats something thats not easily changed. I'd go with nothing less than a 5.7 (250+hp) in a boat that size (just my opinion) it also depends on what your doing with it. Wakeboard, ski, pull tubers or just cruise around the lake. They are easy to maintain and reasonably priced. As far as the outdrive, you'll find a million peoples opinions Volvo Penta vs Mercruiser. Since your new to the I/O world, either is about the same as the other. They both have pros and cons (also my opinion)

Howdy,

So are you talking about an "Inboard" ..... Velvet drive? (V-Drive) Or does it have a sterndrive attached?

There is a difference...
