I've got twin JOhnsons I'd like to refinish over the winter. I've used Ameron and Amerflynt automotive finishes in the past and they seem to blow dooors on the spray can finishes available from Johnson. Anyone try this?

Which would work best.

I want a hard long lasting finish that will surpass the factory finish.

i don't see why they would not work, if properly preped, paints never going to stay on the foot anyway.

One of my neighbors had the know how on auto body painting. We did mine a couple of years ago with auto primer and a top coat of acrylic (?).

THe top coat is not nearly important as what is underneath. Prep is the key.

You'll need something that will etch and bite into the aluminum. The best thing I've found is Zinc Chromate.

If it is a trailered rig the auto finish will hold up fine with the proper prep and then you can clear coat the heck out of it.

If it is moored it will still last but, maybe not as long.

It's all prep.

Does anyone know if the zinc chromate primer can be used with catalyzed finishes?

I would think the Zinc Chromate would work with a catalyzed finish. The "destructions" on the can should advise you. You could always overcoat the zinc chromate with another primer or topcoat that is compatable with the catalyzed finish.

Some top coats don't like Zinc Chromate but other primers do. ZnC sticks to Al REALLY well so it is a good base to start..

I think that's the plan. Zinc Chromate + Epoxy primer + Ameron (Johnson matched of course)

Pictures to follow after Christmas :)

Thanks for all to good information.

Ditto to Zinc Chromate + Epoxy primer + Ameron, in that order.
