Re: Prospective boat purchase...

I responded to the Celebrity because I was able to access the link. My work computer firewall wouldn't allow me to see the Sea Ray. Now that I'm home, I was able to look at the Sea Ray and all I cam say is WOW!! Nice boat and for it's age, it appears to be very well taken care of.

My choice is the Sea Ray. Snap it up now or else someone else will.

The 'Ray is 2 1/2 hours away... With the holiday I will not be able to look at it until next Sunday... I am going to look at the Celebrity in a couple hours and will take some more detailed pictures...

Re: Prospective boat purchase...

Well, talked to the Sea Ray owner... He bought the boat 7 years ago with a cracked block (frozen). He replaced the shortblock with a 350 (4 bolt main) out of a 76(?) Nova. He used an RV cam and had the marine heads rebuilt. It is also essentially sold... another buyer has looked at it and made an offer, that offer was accepted, but no down payment was made (seller says the down payment was offered, but he declined). He was supposed to pick the boat up today, but as of noon had not shown up... If I am still looking next weekend, and it is still available I am going to look at it.

Went and looked at the Celebrity... HUGE disappointment... Did not even bother to take pictures. The photos he sent me must have been at least 1 year old... The hull shows no blisters, but does have several gouges in it. The interior is severely worn and faded, all the carpet was soaked and there was about 2 gallons of water in the bilge. The stringers were solid, but the wood in the inspection hole of the transom and the cross braces (not sure what they are actually called, but the ones the run from side to side) were wet (not soft, but certainly wet). The engine did start easily and run well, But the out drive was missing all of the anodes, and the skeg was broken and then ground to a rounded edge... The trailer was just as bad... Most of the rollers were cracked, tires dry rotted etc...

I also went and looked at the Rinker and was pleasantly surprised. It is a 1987 V195. This is the second owner, he has owned it since 1995. It seems to be in really nice shape. It does have some slight damage to the hull where the transponder for the depth finder got broken off, but the holes have been sealed with caulking and do not appear to be leaking. Bilge, stringers, and transom were bone dry. Floor is solid and carpet is in fair condition. It has a 185hp 4.3L and Alpha 1 outdrive. It took a little persuading to start (first start of the year), once it started it idled smooth and quiet. The current owner replaced the wood the engine cover and one seat base several years ago, but the floor in those areas is solid and he reused the foam and upholstery. He has also reupholstered the bow seats. One of the "backrests" in the bow does have soft wood, but the foam is dry. It comes with a bimini cover, a full cockpit enclosure, and a snap on bow cover. Also has a full width swim platform with extend able ladder, fish finder, cd player, vhf radio, and gps. Seller is including several life jackets, skis, tube etc... The impeller was replaced last year by the dealership when they serviced the outdrive and rebuilt the carb. Bellows have not been done recently, they are softer than new, but have no splits, cracks, or holes. Trailer is a single axle Shoreliner with no brakes. Tires are in good condition and it has bearing buddies. All the rollers are in good condition and the wiring has not been cut or modified. Asking price is $5000, but the owner did say he would take $4200 cash. In short, I liked it ALOT. It took alot of self control to not say "SOLD". I took some pictures for the wife, and she likes it too... Now you guys get to be the judge. CLICK FOR PICTURES

The Rinker is not bad for its year. The 4.3 has enough power to handle the size and weight, but you will always wish you had more power. Its not worth more than $3500, and that's so long as it checks out on the water and has service records to back its condition. It's still early in the search season, and if you branch further out you will see more deals. Plan on a road trip with the wife and take along some cash to deal with. Greenbacks in hand seems to make sellers accept lower offers. Never rush the time of choosing, or you will kick yourself later when you see the one that makes you say "damn!"

That Rinker will get the job done but I agree with wbc, it's a $3500 boat tops. I can't stand it when people list stuff at a premium price ($5k should be like a MINT boat at that age) and don't even bother to clean it up.

Re: Prospective boat purchase...

Thanks for all the help guys. I have done more looking on what a $3500 boat is in my area... I looked at several boats that were in the 3800 to 4200 range and would not have really concidered any of them, yet several have already sold... I agree that the original 5K price is more than the Rinker is worth, but I felt the $4200 was getting close. I spoke with him again the other day, as of right now he said he would take $3900, and if he had to go lower he would keep it and buy a new trailer. He sold his truck several years ago and does not like to tow it with his van because the trailer does not have brakes...

To me, $3900 seems fair, especially with the amount of canvas and other "accessories" that he is including. We are planning to do a test ride this weekend and if all goes well I intend to buy it.

Does anyone have any pointers on any specifics to look for? I think I covered it pretty well in my initial inspection, but if you guys have anything to add I am all ears...

Not bad at all!

Put $3,500 cash in his hand......and stand there. Wait for a reply....then take the boat home.

I woldn't give a penny more than that for the boat.

I did it the best way I know how... By feel. Trim the outdrive all the way up and turn it max left and reach in as far as you can... feel for any roughness, cracks, holes etc... Feel the top, bottom, and sides. Turn the outdrive to the right and repeat. Don't be afraid of applying pressure while you check, if you split the bellow it was time to be replaced anyway...

Is it 100%? NO, there will still be areas that you cannot see or feel. I would say that you can feel 75 to 80 percent of the bellows. Based off of what I was able to feel, I think I would feel comfortable running with the bellows that are on there now and replacing them this winter... That is assuming a water test reveals no leaks or abnormal noises...

Sea Ray is sold

Re: Prospective boat purchase...

Bummer about the ray...
Thought the bellows I had where good.. They didn't even leak water into the bilge... Had a little split on the top from where they got deformed from the outdrive being stored up.. Leaked water inside the bellows soaked the bearing and u joints This is why they get changed out so often.. The only thing tough about the job is coughing up the cash for parts..
I love the V6 in my boat.. Gravy to work on.. Has a lot of power for what it is..
I like the teak.. Many of the folks here hate it, but I love it.. When its made up all pretty... Nothing fiberglass looks as good...
It's every dude for himself this time a year.. Everyone is looking for that summer toy.. That one will get snatched up quick.. Like that sea ray did.. It comes with what folks are looking for.. A nice looking top( lots of folks like those tall ones), covers, all those dang electronic goodies, swim platform with a 3 step ladder( those are cool)... It's also set up kinda to fish too.. Rod holders and that front seat.. Nope that one won't take long to sell..

Re: Prospective boat purchase...

She is mine!!

Water test went well, we discovered that the trailer lights did not work properly, and the boat was way over propped (would only pull 3900 rpm with 3 adults and 1/4 tank of gas)

Got her for $3500 due to the "problems"

Took me 20 minutes to solder in a new plug and the lights work perfectly...

Now I will start a new thread for the prop...

THANKS
