PROV water pump question

Im replacing the pump on my 88prov 150. Wondering how to get the half moon key out of the shaft that holds the impeller. I have tried a chisel but didnt want to damage the shaft or key if possible. Any trick to get it out would be awsome.

Yamaha has stuck with that woodruff key format all this time.They are hard to remove and chances are you will damage the key and concievably the driveshaft getting it out of that groove.Incidental damage that is easily cleaned up and you are back on your way.You are on the right track.

use a grinder and dull the chisel.
hold the chisel as close to perpendicular to the drive shaft as possible and drive the key down.
