While recently working on my boat I noticed my outdrive had a total of about 4 inches side to side in the steering play. I researched the issue on here and found that re-torquing the gimbal ring would help. I did that and it took all the slop out of the steering. My boat is a '95 Alpha one gen II and I doubt the previous owner had ever torqued the gimbal down as I now realize it should be done every 100 hours. Be very careful though if you have a lot of play as I have heard horror stories of people re-torquing and then cracking the gimbal ring. I started off in slow increments begining at 35ft.lbs per side then increased by 5ft.lbs. each side till I reached the spec of 55ft.lbs. Just thought I would bring the issue up for the newer boaters like myself that may not be aware of the issue.
