my merc 800 has transom clamps. id feel safer if it was the bolt on kind when i add the PTT. It would also save me money so i dont have to buy the bracket. is there a cheap way to go about it? or do i have to use the transom clamps?

It would be helpful to know what year motor you have.

I have a '69 800. I added power tilt/trim to it. Yours should be the same. you will need the brackets. Notice the bolt hole in the bracket.

I assume your thread relates to the motor's attachment method.

There is no problem using transom clamps, if used correctly.

They need to be lighly oiled and free turning to begin with. (remove engine / heat threaded aluminum section while running bolt section back and forth with oil)

Tighten with appropriate wrench like a 1/2" air impact or carefully placed cheater lever on the old thumbscrew types.

Most all attachment options have lower holes for bolts, and those are very important. To keep the motor from kicking sideways and right off the boat under a full power powerturn.
