I'm trying to improve the shallow water performance of my jon boat. I really want to add Power tilt & trim, but don't know if #1, if it can be retrofitted to a 2000 25hp Merc that wasn't equipped with it. #2 If it's possible, then is the installation DIY? #3: What depth will i be able to run with the motor trimmed up, 12" or say 20" (trying to get a ballpark #). I use the boat 2-4 times a week, so I feel like the expense probably would be worth it assuming it's around 500-600. #4 Also, do these systems require much maintanence?
Or would it make more sense to just buy a jackplate.

I would just go with the jackplate. You can always tilt the motor a little if you strike bottom. the jackplat will be cheaper and will get the prop as close to the surface as it possibly can be. Depending on how low your boat sits in the water will determine how shollow you can run. Ive been known to run my john boat in water where the rear of my boat was just touching bottom and never had a problem. Maybe a foot of water not sure didnt measure but it was shallow and i made through without much difficulty.

the only issue running a jackplate is that to really maximize it you need a low water pickup on the motor, other wise you're not getting full benefit.
