Puddle of grease under motor

I found a puddle of grease tonight under my year 2000 evinrude 9.9 motor tonight about the size of a grapefruit. It appears its coming out of where the propoller meets the motor on the bottom. Any ideas? I was planning on going fishing Saturday but now I don't know what to do.

Likely it's just unburned 2-stroke oil...does it smell like gas?

You can always drain, check for water, and refill the gearcase to be sure...when was the gear oil last changed?

What color was it? If it was black, it's probably unburned fuel. Anyway, do what Mas said above.

Not sure when it was last changed. I bought the motor used last summer and was planning on changing it this weekend. Before I bought we checked the gear oil and it was clean.

Time to change the gear oil...at the very least, the oil should be changed at the END of each season so water does not have a chance to sit and rust all winter. Drain the oil. If it's milky, you've got water and will need to find the leak with a pressure & vacuum test. Make sure you use NEW nylon washers under the drain & fill screws each time when you refill.

If it was grayish you might want to drain the g/c and have it pressure and vacuumed checked. That will tell you exactly where a leak is if you have one.

Should I not use the motor until this is fixed? Was planning on going fishing tomorrow.

I drained the oil and I think it was good. I then pulled the prop and behind the prop in the area that is shaped like a rocket (gear case maybe) there was a bunch of the oily milky stuff in there. I assume that's not suppossed to be there?

Was the oil you drained from the gearcase clear like ice tea or opaque like a milkshake?

Was there any oil dripping down from the prop shaft itself in the seal area??

It looked just like it should. I took it in yesterday and showed it to them and they said that the amount of the tan color stuff behind the propeller was excessive. They will be doing a vacuum and pressure test.

Good idea. It could be the oring/s leaking around the prop shaft bearing carrier area also. P&V checks are the best if done properly.

Re: Puddle of grease under motor

Guys, I got my motor checked out and they said the pressure and vacuum check did not show any signs of leaks. They didn't really have an explanation for the oil behind the prop. I sure hope they didn't miss something. They told me I should check the oil every once in a while to see if water is getting in.

As long as it p&v checked okay what you found was probably unburned fuel and oil. Just keep an eye on it. I would assume they put new drain plug gaskets on it.

Re: Puddle of grease under motor

that grey oil is normal for a 9.9....do a google search for evinrude 9.9 and there is a very good a artical on those motors...the artical said there is a plastic "vaccume ring" on the end of the original prop that sucks the exaust and unburnt fuel/oil as the motor moves threw the water. If you have a aftermarket prop or the plastic ring is missing, the mixture will build up and slowly drip when not in use....
