Puddle of outdrive oil on floor

Hey, so I got a call last night from the buddy whos water pump impeller I changed 3 weeks ago and said that outdrive oil is leaking out of the water intake holes (where you attach the muffs) and has made a paper plate sized puddle on his garage floor! He has a 3.0lx and alpha 1 gen 2 drive with only about 100 hours or less.

I changed the waterpump and seals, quad ring, shift shaft seal and related orings etc. The kit I bought did not come with the Seal Carrier thats located right under the water pump. It is about 2" in diameter and has one large oring and two lip seals that ride on the driveshaft. I reused the old one.

When the shift shaft seal leaks, I think it drains out the two little holes by the mounting bolt. So I don't think it is that.

Could it be leaking under the water pump and coming up and over the the large water cavity? Or could I have disturbed something in the upper unit and the oil is leaking down to the water cavity?

My buddy is a big guy and not mechanical. I will need to go fix this for him. He lives 3 hours from my house and I want to arrive with the correct parts! :p

Anyone with expericane as to where the oil is coming from?

Wish I could help. I have the exact same symptom and did the same job. I did put a new seal around the shaft, but it must have either popped off or, who knows?

I think it just means that you and I both have to pull the leg, split it, and see what's there. We either missed something, or something got dislodged.

I don't have a definite answer.

Did you put the quad ring in? Did you pressure test it afterwards? Did you seat the carrier seal evenly in there? You may have to pressure test it to find the leak unless it's obvious.

Take a new quad ring with you and the carrier and seals under the impeller plate they leak also ... But the only ones that I have had lube comming from the water inlet vents came down to be the input shaft seals in the upper ..THe lube will dibble down the shaft and fill the imperller housing and go out the vents ......

Take the complete drive off and look into the exhuast were you will see the input shaft to the lower if you see lube going down the shaft then get ready to disassemble the upper completly...

There was a small o-ring between the cases.Right where the oil passage is.
It can be missed easily. It's smaller than a dime and needs to be glued in.

Oh yea,,, I have heard all about the "quad ring"!!! I paid special attention not to forget that one!

It has been a while since my first post and my buddy said he was going to take it to the dealer! I talked him out of it and as it turns out, he will be disassembling the out drive today. He is going to pay special attention to see where the oil is coming from. I will post the information as soon as I get it. THANKS,!
