I have a 1977 model Mercury 20HP 2 cycle and am having troubles with the pull start cord not recoiling if the motor does not crank. I can manually push the pull cord back in and it will catch and on the second pull it starts and the cord recoils back in. Any suggestions would be apprectiated. You all are champs on this site and have never lead me wrong, THANKS in advance to anyone that can help me out on this.

Re: pull start cord not rewinding.

Thanks for the help. The rope has 1 little fray in it, I was planning on replacing the pull cord while I had everything off trying to fix this problem. Is this a good idea? Am I better off buying a pull cord from a local marine shop?

I have basically the same motor that had the same problem a couple of weeks ago. I took the cowling off and sprayed wd-40 on the guide the cord goes through before winding on the spool. It fixed my problem-- good luck.
