Pull start

This is going to sound stupid for the outboard pro's, but I think I better ask before I try to start my motor and rip my arm off.
I have never started a motor that is not retractable. I know I need to wrap the pull rope around the plate ontop of the fly wheel. When I pull this and the motor starts is this disc going to spin also? I want to know what to expect.

yes, maybe 2 wraps is the most, you should do.

Don't let anyone stand right behind you within arm+ropes length or they can get a nasty surprise from the knot on the end of your starter rope.

Rope needs to be small enough diameter to easily slip out of the slot.

DO NOT wrap the rope around your hand, just in case.

I have started many motors like this, and the rope always slides out.

Remove the plug wires from the spark plugs and give it a few yanks to get the feel for it before you try to fire it up.This way it can't bite you and you will know what to expect when the time comes.It is really a pretty low risk event as you will soon see as long as you don't fall out of the boat).Ron G

Once you get the hang of it you can pull with both hands together then let the off hand guide and grab the knot end.We had a friend with a race prepared 1940s Evinrude Big Four 50 hp rope start He could start that big straight drive motor in one pull and not snap anyone with that rope.Then he would flip off the compression release set the spark and off we would go.
A beautiful motor all chrome and polished aluminum.It would run over 50 mph when 30 was a fast runabout.

I started my very old russian engines for many years with the rope, until i got my suzuki, and even those engines have a very hard start nobody was injured . Except my hands from combined effect of hand contact with the rope and big number of tryings .
