Pull the motor to work on the transom?

So I stopped at my local marine repair place to get chummy with the guys now that I have a project boat and am looking for advice. When I tell them that I think I may need to repair the transom they tell me I have to pull the motor to do the repair. Do I really need to pull my I/O to do a repair on the transom? I have a 1979 closed bow Sea Ray with a Mercruiser 898.

I have yet to explore around the transom to know how bad things are but just curious if they(the local shop) is yanking my chain. If I do have to pull the motor any advice on how to do it? I am renting a backhoe to do a little excavation at the house...maybe hang a nice size chain off the bucket... As my wife would say..."I'll have the video camera rolling!" :)

Ayuh,....

They ain't pullin' your chain,...
Everything is bolted To the transom, either directly, or indirectly....

Go up to the Adults Only section of the I/O - Motors forum,+ find a copy of the Manuals for your driveline...
It's all explained there...

at the least, the outdrive would have to come off. alot of times if your transom is done than your stringers are probably close. if that were the case than your engine would need to come out. some one please correct me if im wrong

yes, the engine does need to come out, along with the entire outdrive assemly, the most important part of the transom is the stuff between the engine and outdrive.

Its a huge job, this is what you need to get down too, my current project that had twin I/O
