If you're referring to the 'O' ring on the top of the drive-shaft (just under the pre-load pin).... DON'T put one on... They hold the seal open and water gets into the splines and rusts them out....

Re: Pulled Boat out for first outing today, worked on it all day....

Well, I have not been able to log onto this web site since the weekend, don't know if it was at my end or the web site.
I replaced the water impeller, cranked up again with prop and outdrive in the pool of water, disconnected the pump hose inside the engine compartment, she pumped water very well. Hooked the hose back to the heat exchanger and let her warm up a while.
In the neutral gear, tried to speed up, she wants to choke down at highter than about 1200 RPM. Can pull the throttle back and forth and get her to run on up fine. This is repeated each time. Did the same in the lake but could not get her to speed up in gear with a load.
Now this was after driving about 15 minutes in the lake with no problem the first time.
Sounds to me like it could have some trash in the gas filter and or the carb idle mixture needs to be re adjusted. I had only seen one screw for adjusting anything on the carb mixture. The book says it has two, will look for them elswere on the carb.
This is a # 2 barrel carb on the 470 Mercruiser, 4 cylinder engine. Don't know the #'s on the carb.

One mixture screw means it's a Mercarb carbie... (Rochester's have 2 mixture screws).
Have you checked the basics? Compressions, points dwell, spark plug gaps, timing? If they're all good, then move to the fuel system. It may be time to pull the carbie and give it a good cleaning and reset all the level etc...

Just got out of the boat, the points cap and wires are fairly not used, as well as the plugs. The boat just does not get much time any more. Boats are like planes, they need to be used often to keep in good working order.
You are correct Chris, it has one mixture screw and is a Mercuiser Carb. Pulled the filter, it had a lot of large particles of trash, looked almost like rust. Noticed there is a small hole or port that the fuel would go into the pump of the carb. That much trash would surely slow the fuel flow. This would explain why it ran for 15 minutes (maybe picked up the trash) then had problems.
Most people don't work on something that is working OK now but I wonder if I should open the fuel pump and the fuel line from the tank to check for trash and how it looks?
If it were my plane I certainly would.

Treat it like your plane...

And I totally agree... It's not using a boat that causes problems, it's not using a boat that causes problems.

If I pull the fuel pump and probably just as well replace it. Maybe I should just buy an electric fuel pump and have it handy. I keep tools on the boat for doing small jobs like that.

That is the water pocket cover and if it's got ANY signs of having been melted, it's gotta be replaced... Use a flash-light and check it properly...

Thanks for that piece of advice (and pardon the interruption on this thread). I'm a newbie with a 1984 Mercruiser 470 and noticed the slightly melted cover up there when I had the outdrive apart to change the impeller. I guess I'll be taking it apart again. I still have everything else apart out back to change the bellows, trims sensors and shift cable.

Changing that cover and gasket is a big job... Best start your own thread... Plenty of people have done it and many have made special tools jigs for drilling and re-tapping the threads....

Re: Pulled Boat out for first outing today, worked on it all day....

I am off work today, having fun with working on the boat. I am soooo dumb some times.
It would only crank this morning if I poured fuel into the carb. I had put the filter in backwards. Cranked up fine, runs up great. Trash was that issue!
Let her run for 14 minutes in the tub, temp got up to half way between the 100 and the 175 and stayed there. Would assume the thermostat is good.
Guess I will not know if the water pump was causing the antifreeze to squeeze out of the reservoir till I run her in the lake again??

Just for an update and thanks to you all for assisting me.

I will attempt to upload a photo but otherwise will try and explian.
The water impeller housing the hole on top that the drive shaft goes through, it has a gap that looks like a seal would be in there. My old ones have what looks like melted rubber inside of it. Was there a seal that mealted or did that come from someplace else? The one I used was clean, had no seal.
