Pulled Drive off, gear oil in drive shaft bellows

Just pulled drive off and brownish green gear oil came running out and is puddled in drive shaft bellows. I assume it's not supposed to be in there. Where would it be leaking? Somewhere in the gearcase? Drive shaft and U joints look good, no rust, but they are covered in gear oil too. That's not supposed to be like that either? Before I removed the lower unit I drained gear oil out and it looked good and green, no sign of water. Gonna change the bellows while I got it apart, I gotta take off the bell housing to change those?

You will need to service the seal in the upper drive by the ujoints.I have had mine done recently.I did not do it myself so thats as far as my advice will go.Charlie

Re: Pulled Drive off, gear oil in drive shaft bellows

Thanks guys! Been reading up on this in my manuals, don't think I have the tools or the experience to fix something like this. Think I can just take the drive shaft housing/upper unit into a shop? Will they or can they fix it if I just take them that unit, or do I have to drag the whole boat in? I got it out and can put it back together, hopefully save a few $!

Most places would be happy to fix it off the boat. I've found some wont because they cant "Warranty it" if they dont do the whole job, in my opinion its just a way to get another 200$. Just call around till you find one that will, I did.
