21 ft scarab 454 alpha outdrive. M.S.D. weather proof iginition.

My new used boat is a bute all in excellent condition however the wiring was not propperly done. In fact there were wires just hooked up just to make it go. In order to shut off the engine I had to pull the teather cord. I have an M.S.D ignition where a switch was installed, in the engine bay, to cut power to the ignition. ( another method of killing the engine). Not exactly sure why this was put there. Very messy and lookes like several sets of wires running to the helm that were ignored and redone without removing the old. A real mess. I took out most of the obvious crap and now I am tracing to establish the wires I will keep and the ones I will remove. The dash is out of the boat and is going to get a much needed face lift mainly because it has a few cutouts that I wont need so I cant have voids there, ( just to ugly) I have a couple of questions so far so here I go.

The ignition switch I have has three terminals. B (battery) I (ignition) and S (start). Where and how does the teather kill switch come into play. I have 4 terminals in the teather kill switch.

Along with feeding power to the guages, am I assuming that the Ignition terminal feeds power to the M.S.D modual when ready to opperate engine? I am aware that there is a power feed directly to the battery from the unit that is constant- Looks like a 10 or 12 guage wire.( that is where that switch was installed) but I am sure there is a feed from the key switch to the msd modual to activate it? Also it makes sense that would kill the engine when key is turned off. Am I correct? If so what guage of wire should I use for this? I am thinking # 16 but just want to make sure. I downloaded the diagram from M.S.D and they show an 18 guage wire off the ignition harnes that directs to be connected to the key switch.

As far as the S for start. I am sure that feeds the starter solanoid. What guage of wire should that be?

The B terminal is from the battery. Should I run this from the fuse pannel? If so what size fuse and what guage of wire?

Sorry for the long post just want to give all the info I can. Thanks for the assistance.

Re: pulled my dash out now I have a few questions

I spoke to M.S.D tech support and they told me not to fuse the main power supply wire or constant power to their modual as it may harm the unit if there is a power interuption. Second they supply an 18 guage wire for the ignition that connects to the key switch that is protected in the unit but if I wanted to fuse it a 10 or 15 amp fuse would be ok. He went on to say that the modual is not serviceable so a fuse would be a good idea and they recomend that if the wire needs to be extended to step up the guage wire by one so a # 16 wire would be fine. When I asked him about the 12 volts supplying the key switch he said that does not need to be fused and should come strait from the battery.
So there is a few answers to my questions.

Wow man, that is a mouthfull.
What year is your 454 alpha?

All Mercruisers have a connector (big 2" diameter) which is the last point for all controls on the motor and leads to all of the on boat equipment.

The reason I tell you this, is if you work to that, EVERYONE will be able to help, if you wire around that, you will get no help, because only you (or in this case, the guy before you) will understand.

That being said, study this link

Battery: +12v

If I read your thread correctly you have a direct 10 gauge wire feeding your MSD system (battery + to MSD box). That is fine, but I would ignore the guys advice and fuse your +12 supply to your MSD... Fire is my concern, not the ability for you msd to run :) If the wire shorts, the MSD looses power abruptly anyway, but the live wire will continue to spark and do more damage.

I would go back to the front of the boat, find the "Red/Purple" wire, see if you still have +12v, if so, use that to the ignition switch B. if not, find it, and research why it isn't +12 and fix it... use this for ONLY the ignition and Starting (don't use this for stereo & amps, use a separate circuit)

The lead which turns on the MSD unit, by thinking the "Ignition" is on (today it is most likely attached to your tether cord switch and the switch you described as "a switch was installed, in the engine bay, to cut power to the ignition. "). This would be your "purple" wire, which at some point in history was connected to the coil. I would say that working back through that "kill switch", to your tether you will find it is no longer connected to the "I" on your switch. re-attach your "I" on the ignition switch to the Tether and you should be working again.

I am assuming the starting circuit continues to work - so don't change it. (i.e. turn key to start position, the starter engages the motor.

Good luck. Clean wiring is essential to a supporting boat.
