Got to the lake today, unloaded the boat, wife went to park the truck. A guy came down the dock, seemed all excited, and said that his buddy in a 29' COBALT Cuddy, was unable to start his engines, and would I help him by retrieving the boat ??

He was about 100' from where I was docked, so we headed over to him. He was about 6-7' from a rock penisula that seperates the lake, from the wake speed area. We got him, pulled him back from the rocks, and towed him to the dock.

He had power to the guages, and nothing to the starters/engines.

We got the marina mechanic over there, and when I left, the boat was still tied up to the dock.

I at first thought that it was the "deadman" (lanyard switch), but, I didn't even see one. He said there wasn't any. I don't know.

He told me that he had hollered at 2 or 3 others to help him, and they just drove off and left him !!!!

He offered to pay me, or buy my family lunch, but we declined !! I just told him to help someone else sometime !!!!!

(Helping him made me feel good about it though !!!) ;)

Nice!!! Not many left in this world that would do something and expect nothing back. Good for you. This will come back two fold. I believe in karma and it will come back to you. Thanks for being honest.

It's only right to help out. We have towed our fair share in over the years. Never asked for anything in return and never will. A thank you is always nice though.

I'm amazed that people just left him sitting there after hearing him call for help. Wow, some people...

Re: Pulled one in today !!!!

I have towed stranded boats in and never asked for anything in return. I had to be towed in one time and offered to repay. He declined and said that I had towed him in once before in another boat that he had. One of those returned favors that comes back at you........SS

I have been towed more than once. it ain't fun. I towed a boat last year that had towed me in the year before.

It's all Karma. Karma can be an interesting creature. But I do believe what goes around, comes around!!

Re: Pulled one in today !!!!

The guy, DID say thanx, and seemed embarrased that he had to ask for help.

To top this off, it was his very first outing with his "new to him boat". :(

While we were there at the dock, a man and his son were swimming into the dock, with a rope in each of thems hand pulling in a 18-19 foot bowrider. We pulled the boat in the rest of the way for them, and got them tied up to the dock. I was told that the starter went out.

Yeah, I can't/couldn't believe that the dock had people around it, and NO ONE would help them at all. I lost about 20 minutes of my day with my family, but I figured that I made a friend for life !!!!!!!!!! ;)

Evidently the guy got my name from the mechanic. (The mechanic, and I know each other). He called me personally on my cell phone, and thanked me again.

Life is good !!!!!!! ;)

He was a nice guy !!!!!!!!

woosterken you are 100% correct.

you are required to provide assistance. not necessarily towing.

You are required, to make sure every one on board is safe, and that assistance is on the way. a friend with a boat, Seatow, USCG, etc. that they are properly anchored, out of the channel, this may require towing.

But if you just pass them buy, you are violating USCG regulation.

Re: Pulled one in today !!!!

I jumped some guys dead battery about 3 miles out in Bulls Bay, above Charleston a couple of weeks ago. I'm thinking,"I sure hope I can get this guy's boat running or I'll have to tow him 3 miles back to the ramp". These guys spoke coastal Gullah, and I never understood a word they said, except "thank you", as they were driving away. It just made my afternoon to help those guys!

No, actually it's the LAW that you must render assistance. You don't have to put you or your vessel in peril, and you don't have to tow anyone, but you do have to assist.

But wait, this boat was a Cobalt? There has to be some mistake. I know of a forum where it's been stated that Cobalts are perfect. So this must have been a Bayliner or Sea Ray with Cobaly badges on it! Cause Cobalts don't break down. And Cobalt owners don't make mistakes (like not throwing out an anchor to keep from drifting into rocks!)! :) ;)

Re: Pulled one in today !!!!

A couple of weeks ago I towed a pontoon in that had ran out of fuel. The people on the boat also said that they had been passed up for at least a half hour. They had even givin up trying to flag someone and started to paddle. We were in a busy area of the lake and thaey really werent to far from the marina. That same weekend one of my vehicles broke down and the same people I towed in let me keep My boat in there lot till I could go pick it up. They saved my hiney in the end.

Just a reminder that no good deed goes unpunished....

I mean rewarded...

Karma is good to have on your side. Hope they got the boats all fixed.

The people who ignored all of those in distress will also reap the rewards of Karma, remember that....
