is that water showing a relection of bearing? The grease might have saved you but water is getting in, mine was nowhere near that and the guys didnt like it,so expect bad news in replies.

I was almost a brown liquid grease. I was wondering about it. The universals felt real smooth, so they seem ok. This will be the 3rd summer I've owned the boat so it may be bellows time...

You also have an original shift shaft seal (at the upper end of shift shaft) it is real tiny one. Those ones start leaking water after a few years of service and water can get into the driveshaft bellows. There is a replacement part, which contains a bronze bushing with 2 beefier seals, that should be used instesd of old tiny seal.

look how rusted your u joints are... deff sign of water intrusion..i pulled my drive on my 1994 alpha one gen 2 and they looks perfect... no rust.. but if they are smooth then you may be okay. and excess grease is normal.. not water though.. be sure to jube joints and allign motor

While the drive is off: Bellows and shift cable boot. Take 2 fingers and get friendly with the gimbal bearing. Spin the center and feel for fetching or roughness. If it spins smooth, grease it good. And spray the spline and U-joints down with WD-40 or CRC. More than likely you will need a bearing.

Re: Pulled outdrive tonight - Pics

yep, more than bellows time. certainly water intrusion.
looks to me like your in for it to me.

driveshaft bellows
gimble brg.
shift slide
ujoints
yoke and seal in the drive. better look at the brgs (some of which will be in your hands) while your dong the yoke and seal. i think the liquid your seeing is gear lub. leaked out the ft. of the drive from a rusty yoke, that ate up the seal. speaking of which, if there was water present, and gear lub leaks out via the yoke seal, water can also leak into the drive. so. hows your gear lub look? got any? milky? just food for thought..
while your there, ya might as well do the shift cable and bellows, water hose, the new double seal already talked about for the shift shaft.

your in for some fun it looks like to me..

don't reuse any of your rusty ujoints or the gimble brg. from the way i get it, if they've been subject to water, which yours has, these two items will fail. feel good or not..

i've done this deed once on my 1 drive. it is fun. read and re read your sevice manual and ask lots of questions here if ya don't understand..

Re: Pulled outdrive tonight - Pics

Thanks everyone for the insight. I'm going to take a look at the gimble bearing this morning. FYI, before winter I changed the gear lube. No milky lube at all. May need to call the boat mechanic on this one...

EDIT: Just got off the phone with the boat shop. Dropping it off next Friday. I feel more comfortable with them replacing all the parts.

Re: Pulled outdrive tonight - Pics

Finally my boat is fixed. It was sitting at the shop for 3 weeks while they waited on a couple parts. (Trim senders was 1). They pulled my outdrive checked the bellows, which I came to find out he replaced the day before I bought my boat 2.5 years ago. No bellows needed. Said it was a slight leak in a gasket. Had everything checked and replaced if needed, trim senders, impeller kit, etc. for the tune of $450. A lot less than I thought. Picking in up tonight, then sanding to epoxy and bottom paint tomorrow.

Thanks for all the comments and help,

Ron
