DSC02120.jpgDSC02121.JPGDSC02122.JPGdeck2119.jpgWent fishing last weekend and decided now is time to replace carpet for up coming summer fun. Got boat last year and carpet in the stern, in front of the engine and between the rear facing seats was torn and raw decking exposed. Have in mind this has been an AZ boat (as far as I know). Remeber it is a dry heat. Last year as a temporary measure. I pulled up that part of carpet sanded it, treated with wood preservative and painted with rustoleum oil base. She did great all summer with kids getting in and out, in and out.....
So pulled up all the carpet today and had lots of delamination of epoxy. Sanded everything down to fresh wood. Wood looked liked barn weathered wood. No soft spots and actually found spots where seems Bayliner shoots in foam. Foam is as dry as this desert. Everythis is covered with white epoxy/paint with flex /sting of blue and some chop strand. When looking in the ski locker. I seems the under side of the deck is not coated. Was this a standard practice of Bayliner? The one piece in the engine compartment is the only piece that I need to replace. I will coat all exposed edges with poly-resin and CSM where I can. Deck is still sealed nice to the boat. THE PLAN: coat deck with poly til tacky, lay a layer of CSM with Poly-resin , dry sand then finish with layer of 1708. Once all cured finish with 20 or 28 oz. rubber backed marine carpet.
Feed back, anyone?

Those pix look very familiar.:(

Yes, it was apparently Bayliner's standard not to properly seal the underside of the sole.

Talked with local fiberglass supplier here in Phoenix. He asked if I was going to gel coat the deck and that Fiberglass is not water proof. This going out to all who like giving there 2 cents.

Should I seal deck with one layer of 1.5 oz CSM and gel coat then carpet OR
put down two layers of 1.5oz CSM then carpet?

That is the qestion?

Looking to achieve best water proof / rot prevention results.

I would make sure the ply is in good shape, glass 2 layers of 1.5 oz CSM, and coat with something like Durabak. I would personally skip the carpet unless you get snap-in. You can check out the mods I did to my Bayliner 1950 in the link under my signature...

Thanks, I looked over your work last year. Great work. Wife wants carpet so going with 28oz marine carpet on the deck. Like I said wood is like old barn wood, took it down to clean wood. I have the 3.0 OMC and she runs great. Put Solas 17pt. alum. and runs better than stock prop. Probably get stainless on this summer.

IMG_20120428_210804[1].jpg[99% done just need to screw hose clamps and speaker wires back in place. Not to mention grease gimble beaering and check alignment. I go all year round so I wait until April or May. View attachment 143858QUOTE=palace;3732924]95% complete looking good! View attachment 142765[/QUOTE]
