Just bought a 13' whaler with the old pulley steering. I've read the old posts about wrapping the cable around the steering drum and I'm still lost. I had nothing to go by. I think I've got the rear pulley setup okay. But, how does it go around the drum or spindle HELP!!!!

Re: Pulley steering help

Hi there Fp. The 2 ends of the cable should be back at the motor well. They should attach to the motor. You need to loosen the cable from the motor first. Back at the spindle, all you need to do is wrap the slack in the cable 3 or 4 times around the spindle. It should look like a big screw with threads. You may need to have someone hold tension on the cable from back at the motor while you do this. After you wrap the cable on the spindle 3 to 4 times, turn the wheel til the cable wraps are midway between the top and bottom of the spindle. Lock the steering wheel in place with a piece of rope or something. Now re-tighten the cables back to the motor. Turn the steering wheel full left and full right to make sure all is okay. If you're not getting full steerage, you may have too much cable on one side or the cable may not be long enough. If it's binding, you should be able to locate it easily. Very simple trouble free system. Good luck.

Re: Pulley steering help

Thanks Chief,

It can be very frustrating, but then rewarding in the end. My trouble with the spindle seems not knowing whether to go over or under the spindle.
I've been told 3 laps around and one line may come over the spindle and the other line will go under and out the second access hole to the back of the boat and the motor. When I try, the line doesnt want to stay on the spindle, may i don't have enough pressure on it.

I will follow you instructions tomorrow if I can.

Re: Pulley steering help

I have the same 13 whaler with the side console and it is a royal pain in the butt to try and wrap the cable around the drum while the console is installed. I will be reinstalling new cable on my whaler and will take the console off so that I can get the cable on the drum just as shown in the link above. I will then temporerilly tape this together with duct tape so that it won't unravel and rerun the cables back through the side pulleys and stern pulleys and back at the engine. After it is all hooked back up I will fine tune the cable tension and then take the tape off.
