Re: Pulling a Sea Ray 268 Sundancer - Awkward?

jstubble, my dad pulled a 1989 SeaRay 268 behind his 1995 4 door Tahoe. it was TOO MUCH boat for that truck. His 1997 Suburban 2500 4wd 7.4l was a MUCH BETTER tow vehicle. That SeaRay is HEAVY!!!!!
But not anymore difficult to trailer than any other 8.5' wide boat. It was easy to load on the trailer. That was a function of the boat moved very slowly at idle, plus my dad knows how to back a trailer in the water and how to set up bunks and bow stanchions properly.

The biggest concern with those 268s is when you have a 454 in front of an Alpha. Or worse, only a 350!

This combo is closer to 10,000 lbs than 5,000 lbs. I'd bet my house on it...

You'd have two houses, cause you're right. My dad, who is sitting downstairs, just confirmed that his 1989 SeaRay 268 weighed over 10,000lbs on the trailer. Closer to 11,000 lbs. The steel trailer did weigh almost 2200lbs. But he said that published 7500lb weight is just a lie.

You don't need a diesel, you need a 3/4 ton or 1 ton truck though. And his Suburban got 6mpg towing that boat on the flat ground of Florida. It got 6mpg towing it up to Louisville, KY, too!

IMHP its way to big to tow on a regular basis i see people doing it and you need a really perfect launch ramp...

My dad never had any problems anywhere. Less than perfect ramps included. Of course a 3/4ton Sub with 4wd and 4.10 axles makes up for a lot of shortcomings! ;)

I towed my 268 (single 260hp) with a new 1/2 ton Chevy pickup. For a couple tows a year, it did just fine. If I was towing it a couple times a week, it probably would have cut the lifespan of that truck considerably. I would always put it in 4wdr coming up the ramp.

Nope, didn't see that, but it's still good input.

Just for your information I am considering a similar purchase and have a 2010 F150 with the max tow package rated for 11000 #s. this was good information thanks for everyone responding as I have to decide on a boat and figure out either moorage or trailering options and a Searay 268 is one of the options.

thanks for continuing to respond.
