Re: Pulling Engine to Replace Oil Pan - 1st timer - edit: 1 More Question!
Mike, I replaced the pan and timing cover on my 4.3LX last summer. I looked in the salvage yards, nada, I went to NAPA, nada. Mercruiser wanted $175, but I bought a chromed automotive pan from a speed shop online for $49. The gaskets are the automotive version, and are available anywhere. NAPA had a timing cover and seal set for$25. Pan was identical to OEM Mercruiser, except it was a bit more shallow. I needed to bend the oil pump pickup (with my hand) up about 1/2 inch. Timing cover fit perfectly. I painted both with rustoleum rusty metal primer (brush it on, it's the best) and black spray enamel.
