Pulling lower unit

I want to pull the lower unit of my 1996 Johnson 112. Since I purchased the rig used, I have no idea what condition the water pump is in and I'd hate to be 10-15 miles offshore and have it go.

I have a Seloc manual and everything looks like a straightforward procedure. The only concern I have is the shift linkage. If I pull the "pin" right beside the two shifting rods, as it says to do, is something going to slide over to disconnect from the downrod that goes down into the lu? Is this going to be a pain in the butt to reconnect after I reattach the lu?

Any comments will be appreciated. I have really picked up a lot of good stuff from this forum. Thanks a lot.

Re: Pulling lower unit

My '98 Johnny 150HP has a clip that you pull. This allows a rod to move sideways, and out of the hole in the shift rod. The LU can now come off. My OEM service manual recommends the motor be in forward. My motor also has a black plastic bushing that also moves. It took me a bit to figure out that it was covering the hole the clip went into, when I went to reassemble.
