Pulling Merc 470/Outdrive, what to replace?

Hey guys.. first post here but long time reader. This place definitely keeps me motivated to take on new boat projects because of the wealth of information. Having said that...

I just got a new boat here and I'm not even sure what kind it is yet. I'm having a hard time finding the exact model and until I get the title, I won't be sure. I believe the manuf. date is 1978, give or take a year. Anyways, it has the Mercruiser 470 170hp with what I believe is the Merc One outdrive... I'm not sure on that outdrive part, but I believe going by that date and what I've read on here that it was the first outdrive they made? The floor, stringers, and ribs were all rotten in the boat so all of that is coming out. The transom is solid as far as I can tell and I will know for sure when everything is out. The motor must come out because the front motor mount has failed and is about 3" lower from normal position. This is putting the outdrive shaft in a bind where it enters the the motor because of the motor sitting lower in the front throwing the alignment WAY out.

When I first got the boat, I didn't realize that the motor was tilting forward and I proceeded to fire up the motor to make sure this thing would even run. After some tinkering, I got it to fire up and it actually ran well for having sat up for 10years. It seemed that it was excessively hard on the starter to turn over, even with two new batteries pushing it, and now I want to think that this was because the drive shaft had the motor in a bind making it hard to turn. Does this sound reasonable? I only ran it in gear for less than a minute but I'm worried about any damage I may have caused. Coupling? I'll check it out, what else should I look for?

And finally, the main question in my post. While I have this motor out and the outdrive apart, what should I go ahead and replace? I am going to order the impeller, change the oils, carb kit, plugs, wires, already cleaned the points. Anything else?

Sorry for the long-winded post... wanted to make sure to mention all of the details! And thanks in advance for any help... this is a project boat and I've never done anything like this before, so I'm needing all the help I can get!

If it has sat 10 yrs, I would also do all the bellows and shift cable, and probably the u-joints and gimbal bearing as well.

Ok, sounds good. Upon pulling the plugs, wouldn't you know that two of them broke off, probably due to the crazy rust on the plugs where water had apparently been puddling. Looks like an easy-out job.

What I've been reading is that I need to use marine spark plugs... I have the plug numbers from the manual so I should be ok using those numbers to get some plugs from the parts store, right? And I'm wondering if they will have some plug wires there as well?

Another thing... the previous owner had plugged the mech. fuel pump and installed an electric pump on the transom. From what I've read, this is fine, except that the pump would run constantly when the ignition key was turned ON, even when the motor was not running or being cranked. So I want to use the mech. pump again. I took it apart, the lever is fine, as is everything else except the seals (diaphragm?) and the filter, so I'm wondering if there is a rebuild kit for this pump? I looked on iboat, but I'm unable to find one so far.

Last thing for now... this boat just had a little in-line fuel filter right after the elec. fuel pump. I know this is not USCG approved and I want to replace it with a screw-on canister-type filter/separator. I see several different brands on here, are there any preferences? Mallory, Seasence, Sierra? And will some fuel line from the auto store be ok for this?

Thanks a lot!! Many more questions to come I'm sure..

Manuals are in the Adults Only section
Any filters are placed BEFORE the pump ,not after. Carb should have steel line too.

Re: Pulling Merc 470/Outdrive, what to replace?

I found the manuals earlier this week... those are definitely a big help! Between that and this forum, I've learned a ton about these I/O setups. This is my first, so it's definitely new territory for me. Sure is fun though...

Another quick question if you guys don't mind... when I pulled the outdrive off, I had previously drained the gear oil, however there was still oil draining out from the gasket that is between the outdrive and the part that is mounted to the transom (?). This looked the same as the gear oil I drained. Is it normal to have a lot of this oil draining from the top like that? I was under the impression that it would all drain out from the bottom. Also, the gasket tore (of course), even while I was trying to be careful. Can I order this individually and is something similar to Permatex gasket-maker ok to use here? I would think not, but just checking.

Thanks again... :D
