pulling motor out of water

My mother has a pontoon boat with a 1976 Mercury 110 outboard motor. Serial #454-854 2. She asked me to pull the motor out of the water, but I was having some difficulty. I know this sounds idiotic, but not being boat savvy has rendered me useless with what seems like an otherwise simple problem. What do I need to do to tilt the motor out of the water? Thank You

So I'm not the only one who after lower his engine at the start of the day then pulled in to the dock and fought with his engine for 30 minutes until I noticed that there was a clipping device that was holding the engine locked to the engine mount. I found a lever marked tilt, but it was busted. The clip was only spring loaded and I managed to raise it and release it's grip. Good Luck. :)

Other folks will help you on how to tilt it. If you live anywhere where it freezes over the winter you will want to get it, and probably the boat it is attached to, out of the water and leave the motor in a verticle position (to drain all the water out).

You will also need to have the motor winterized so that it is ready to go next season whether you are in a freezing area or not.

Some of those older Merc's, you just put them in "Forward" Gear and raise the lower unit. Drove me nuts on an old '67 Model.

Try putting the motor into forward.
You may have to touch the starter a little to get it to shift.
Also the motor may have power trim and tilt
and you just have to find the trim and tilt
buttons.

I think meant2be is on track, being how it's only an 11HP.

A Merc 110 is a 9.9hp motor and I believe that even those have to be in gear to lift up.

Craig
