OK! gettin ready to pull my 5.7 ltr engine out of my boat. Problem is the top of the back of my boat sits about 5' off the ground and to high for a standard cherry picker engine puller to work. My question is this, has anyone built a rig out of wood over the back of their boat to pull their engine??? Im thinking of building a header out of 2x6 or 8 and using 4x6 post with gussets at the connections and angle bracing the posts with 2x4" has anyone made anything like this,, I really dont have any other ideas or options,,, what say you guys??

Thousands of guys have done exactly this. I've seen many setups like this up north that pull boat engines as well as engines off of float planes.

Check the neighborhood phone book.......... Look up wrecker's and start calling. Sometimes it is cheaper to hire a wrecker with an extendable boom (or even a backhoe) for 1 hour then to build your own gantry.

If you have too........ and have a pick up...... tow the boat to a place with equipment....... pull the engine and place it into the rear of a pick up.

Yes you can build a lifting set up and use a chain/bloc/tackle or a cable come-a-long (tractor supply sells them cheap) but I like to use local equipment which is faster and they can place the motor on a pallet (Add wheels to the pallet ;)).

You can figure on about a bit less than 600 lbs.

I built my gantry in my storage unit for about $50. 3 vertical 2x4's for each upright, 3 horizontal 2x8's, 2x4's for the kickers.

I just pulled all the screws out of the wood and made shelves out of it this week.

you can also get a wrecker boom like Bob mentioned, or hit up your local rental company for one of their large engine hoists or a-frame hoists.

Lwarden,

It's really a good idea to keep all of your posts about your project in one thread. It helps the members here on iBoats to keep track of what you're doing. Having multiple threads makes it hard to know what you're talking about at times.
