hello again,

In a week or two I will be pulling my 85' 140 hp Evi off of my 20' wellcraft. Is there anything of interest I should know before I start. The reason I am pulling is to just "cherry it up" a little. Basicly just a fresh paint job. Also the tilt/trim unit needs to be worked on. The pin for the rod end of the tilt cyl. is quire rusty, I can see having to grind, drill and press that thing out of there. Any tips/help would be great.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Pulling my engine?

hello
having worked on units in our area for some years I will give you some advice. use oxy/acetylyne on that pin. dont beat on it so much it mushrooms the end. leave the motor mounted on the transom while removing the tilt unit. the 6 bolts that hold the unit to the bracket are incredibly hard. use plenty of heat to assist in removal. usually if you break them off removal of the transom brackets will be nessasary. that unit can be removed from the brackets if all the bolts come out.
on that saltwater locked pin I use plenty of heat a 12" 3/4" dia brass rod and a 5 pound maul.
dont miss the rod. it hurts
or better get a buddy to hold the rod when you hit it :) :) .

Re: Pulling my engine?

Is it much work to rebuild one of these t&t units. I don't know if it needs it or not yet. What does a kit cost? I was going to take it to work and sandblast and repaint it. It seems to work o.k. ,just squeals a little comming up, I think it's the rusted pin. Thanks

Re: Pulling my engine?

best advice I can give ya is to remove the unit and send/take it to Rons marine in portsmouth VA. he made some fixtures for testing them.
its kinda a hole in the wall shop but him and robert are some of the finest techs I ever delt with. bar none. and on the plusside he his about the most honest dealer I ever delt with. if ya talk with him ask about a problem with a 9.9 t0 15 conversion problem he had some years back. he said he will tell me but it will cost about 600 dollars. seems it ate his lunch and once he found the problem he had so much time in it he would not charge the customer but he wont say anything other than it was simple and if ya wanna know pay me :) :)
no I am not a omc/bomb dealer. I worke as a contract tech with him for a bit. I have delt with him since the 1980's

Re: Pulling my engine?

I painted my 1987s last year but was able to do it without pulling the engine - I had no problems with the trim/tilt. Here is the result:

Re: Pulling my engine?

Well, I we got the tilt cyl. pin out with little to no problems. A friend of mine and I were checking things out on the motor. I don't have my manual here at home so I will try to describe the peices and parts as good as I can. The arm that connects the steering cable to the motor is quite rusty. I would like to blast and paint it. Is there a way to seperate the tramsome bracket from the motor. We saw 2 bolts on the steering arm and what looked like four on the radiused section on the lower unit. We were wondering if those six bolts would seperate the two peices. The only problem we saw was a small linkage running down through the middle of it, is this the shift linkage for the lower unit? I'm just looking for the easiest way to manage this 140 evi. Thanks again in advance.

Anybody?

I could use some help on that last post. I startd to remove the t/t unit and the bolts are being a real mother. Thought if I could get the whole bracket on the bench it might be easier. Thanks.

Re: Pulling my engine?

8up - Do you have the OMC shop & parts manual? OMC manuals have great parts explosion diagrams that should answer all your questions.

Re: Pulling my engine?

No the only manual I have is a Clymer. It has not been a whole lot of help so far. I did not see any drawings of the stern bracket and assoc. parts. Thanks.
