I have heard that it is not good for the engine bearings to remove a plug wire while your outboard is idleing. If you had to check for a dead cylinder while idleing how would one do this properly......Regards.Tom8)

A spark tester. They are available at any auto parts store and are not expensive.

A spark tester would let him know if that cylinder was getting a good spark...but by dis-abling the cylinder by removing the wire he can also determine (by noting the relative drop in RPM) whether that cylinder is doing it's share compared to the others.

Doing this is hard on the bearings? How so? I've never heard that before.

If you pul lthe plug wire be sure to ground it while the motor is running.

You can also use a temperature gun. Dead cylinders will be cooler.
