Re: Pulling the engine??

I apologize to all. I stand corrected. I had tried to go to sleep, thinking I'd deal with the issue tomorrow, but it stayed on my mind. So I turned off the alarm system, went down to the garage, and picked up the Mercruiser manuals. It's now 12:10 AM and I just finished re-reading all the sections dealing with pulling and installing Mercruiser engines. The instructions do indicate to use the lifting rings attached to the engines. I cannot find where I read differently. So, to be fair, I must concede that the advice I gave appears to be incorrect. However, I personally wouldn't trust them. I have the lifting chain bolted to the ends of opposing cylinder heads. I'm just waiting for the tow hitch I ordered online to be delivered so I can rent a trailer to take the engine to the marina so I can install it. To be continued. Safe boating and good night, all. Re: Pulling the engine??

bookworm, what you probably read was to not lift from the eye at the very front of the engine. That eye is used for setting the alignment. You can use the other eyes for lifting.

The strength of that steel is probably around 150ksi.. Even if it is 1/8 inch thick and has a half inch cross section around the eyes, you would still need a tensile load of over 9000 lbs to break it. Your 900 lbs engine shouldn't cause it to blink.

Parts!!!

Parts!!!

Guys, I need a good website for parts. I have an 'estimate invoice' from a mechanic and I'm about to pull the engine but I need to make sure that I'll have parts...and the right ones.

Merc engine.

I don't think I understand. You have a mechanic invoice with a parts list that you want to track down, or are you taking your engine and parts to a mechanic? Either way I'm a little worried.

Re: Pulling the engine??

Good day,

I have a Merc 350 Alpha One. Anyone have a service manual as to how to pull the engine? I have the service manual for the outdrive. I have tons of work to do on this and can't afford to mess anything up (and certainly can't afford to have a mechanic do it)

Thanks y'all[/QU
'

google Seloc repair manuals, im pretty sure they make them for all types of boat engines

Re: Pulling the engine??

Imported The man: You're right. I did a little checking today while I was out at the marina. The lifting hooks are the same ones used on the Mercruiser big blocks, heavy engines. However, as verified by the mechanic at the marina, if the front hook is attached to the thermostat housing rather than the intake manifold, it should not be used for lifting. The threads on the housing bolts can pull out. If it's attached to the intake manifold, then it's strong enough to lift the engine. My engine swapping experience is from the auto repair shop my family owned for decades. Car engines rarely have lifting hooks, though some do. We always bolted a chain or special lifting rig to the front and back of the opposing cylinder heads. Never lost an engine or transmission that way. We sometimes pulled the engine with the transmission attached. I'm looking forward to finally placing (not dropping!) my "new" engine into my boat; hopefully sometime next week. Safe boating all. Hy

danond-----I got an estimate from a marine mechanic and it was way too much for me to spend. I can afford the parts and do the work myself. I have an invoice from the mechanic and want to get the parts online so I can do the work myself...
